The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

While the Dan and Jay archives generally hold very little about the surrounding circumstances of political strife, there are documents that relate to the group’s own experiences during wars and other such major events. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is included here due to its affect on the careers of Dan and Jay’s Comedy Hour.  Dabney Clam had recently joined the Edison Phonograph Company, a choice which did not sit well with long-time sponsors Gornisht Foods, Inc.  Dabney, who forewent the use of the sobriquet “Jay” when functioning as the recorder of disposable interview cylinders, had traveled to Sarajevo to interview Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914.  In fact, had he not woken up late the morning of June 28, he would’ve been in the car with Ferdinand and his wife as they were assassinated, as he had planned to do the first mobile cylinder recording that very day.
