The automobile magnate, having just surpassed the sale of one million Model Ts, received word of an upcoming auction at famed auction house the American Auction House, at which would be sold a one-of-a-kind piece of comedy art by Dan and Jay. Entitled “The Inquisitive Florist,” the piece’s contents were known only to Dan, Jay and, after winning the auction, Henry Ford himself. Ford paid a record $87,790 for the exclusive ownership of this piece of comedy, helping realize the Dan and Jay’s Comedy Hour vision of making humorous art for the smallest audience possible. “If we can make one man laugh,” Paloof was reported to have said, “then he’s followed the wording of the contract.”
Ford followed the contract he signed to the letter and, though he was allowed limited private performances of the cylinder, he is rumored to have listened to it only once. The cylinder itself exists in the archives of the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. The Museum has released no official word on whether or not they will make attempts to exploit the cylinder or its contents commercially when the embargo is lifted, on December 18, 2022.
